How To Build Kitchen Cabinets: The Ideas Of Its Design
May 31, 2022
As you peruse style options for your kitchen cabinet doors and drawers, consider combining different styles or colors to make the overall design more interesting. For instance, if you like the Mission style, you might consider complementing that basic choice with sections of cabinets that vary the design or color. One easy way to do this is to swap out wood panels for glass in one section of the kitchen (there are a number of glass options, including beaded and frosted). Or you can use the slab style on drawer faces. To vary the color, consider using a contrasting stain or painting cabinets in one area of the kitchen, perhaps along a short wall or an island. Think of the design process as painting with a large paintbrush: A few graceful strokes break up the monotony of all the cabinets in the same color and design. You can tie the design together with details like cove molding at the top of the cabinets or complementary handles. Design software can help you visualize the possibilities.
If you are going to invest the effort and money into building your own kitchen cabinets, you’ll want to be sure to get just the look and design you want. In addition to choosing a style that pleases you and your family, be sure to provide spaces tailored for your family’s needs, such as shelving and cabinet space for dinnerware, glassware, and cookware as well as ample storage to keep small appliances tucked away yet within easy reach. When you build yourself, you can design drawers, cabinet openings, and shelves that are just the right depth, width, and height for your favorite kitchen items. Kitchen design involves more than the cabinets, though. Plan meticulously to include appliances notably, a refrigerator, range or oven and cooktop, dishwasher, and vent fan. Also plan for lighting and electrical outlets, including those on the wall between the countertop and the wall cabinets. It’s common to measure for countertops after the cabinets are installed, but you may want to choose them both ahead of time. Don’t forget to plan for special amenities. You may, for instance, want a lazy susan for a corner cabinet, a pull-out garbage bin, or a shelf organizer of a certain type. Be sure to build cabinets that will successfully house the features you want.
